Urban's Leifsdottir Line on the Upswing
The recession caused most brands to reduce spending, lower prices and more basic design styles, but Urban Outfitters green light for the launch of Leifsdottir, contemporary label, which could be sold wholesale $ 10 million later this year.
The vintage inspiration, detail-oriented line made its debut on the day Lehman Brothers collapsed. However, the financial crisis did not stop Urban Outfitters CEO Glen Senk.
" 'No' it makes me nuts, because 'no' is not only an answer," Senk said in an interview. "Must be" Yes "or" How, 'do not you?
At a time when many retailers are playing it safe, slightly romantic dresses and sportswear with tailoring the old tracks have managed to secure a place in the retail landscape. This spring, Leifsdottir - a traditional Scandinavian name that translates as "daughter of Leif" and is a nod to the Director of Stationery Finnish Johanna Uurasjarvi's - will be sold in 150 doors, including Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's and Bergdorf Goodman, and independent stores as Anthropologie. It hangs around labels like Marc by Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, Milly, and Elizabeth and James.
For the first time in spring, Leifsdottir be sold outside the U.S. at Holt Renfrew in Canada and Selbu in Hong Kong. Neiman Marcus has increased its purchase of 31 stores in five years, despite a year ago, the company felt it was too cheap, "said Senk. Leifsdottir also available in the new Anthropologie store in London and will be sold at a second location to open there in March.
Other European potential sites for Anthropologie stores are explored, with Paris at the top of the list. Leifsdottir be sold at Anthropologie Europe website when released in March. In addition, an e-tail site Leifsdottir be available in January. This autumn, the brand plans to introduce shoes and handbags that will hit stores in early 2011. Senk said he is considering the introduction of other labels wholesale, with a launch as soon as soon as next year, but provided no details.
Christine Chen, analyst at Needham & Co., said the strategy is similar to what the company did with Free People, which began with the wholesale and distribution has been limited to a handful of the independent shops.
"What we're trying to do is create a brand with great caution," he said. "One of the reasons why it has been so well received by customers at wholesale is that good quality fashion at great prices is very good and is very attractive."
Although no immediate plans to Leifsdottir boutiques, Senk said there could be nearly 200 in the coming years and at least 100 stores in Pueblo Libre, and 250 units for each of Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie. All these labels, as well as the ground, a garden center that launched a drive retail sales this year, is owned by Urban Outfitters. There are 154 stores from Urban Outfitter, 135 units of Anthropology and 34 Free People stores.
For Leifsdottir, Uursjarvi said his goal was to maintain reasonable prices and use the sewing skills were honed at their school in Helsinki. Uursjarvi, the first designer hired by Anthropologie for 10 years, likes to say that he designed "everything from shirts to mugs of tea and silk dresses to the sofas."
"We do not react to the recession, but it is a mark of the recession," he said.
On average, Leifsdottir is three times the price of Anthropologie, with retail items from $ 225 to $ 240. Anthropologie average unit price has remained more or less the same in recent years, said Senk. As for the recession, he said, "People do not come from spending 100 to zero. The people went from 100-90 to spend, so we had to be smarter to get more of those 90".
With such unexpected details such as boning, crinoline petticoat and corset-type training, Leifsdottir is in the same sense as "slow cooking," said Senk.

Breaking News: Government recalls a record 2.1million dropside cribs Click to ...
WASHINGTON - The head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission acknowledged on Tuesday that the agency "has not acted as quickly as it should" about crib safety problems.
Interviewed on morning news program shown in the wake of the largest ever recall of cribs, Inez Tenenbaum President pledged that the CPSC was "firmly but fairly" enforce a law Congress passed last year to give regulators greater authority to police the industry.
More than 2.1 million drop side cribs by Stork Craft Manufacturing Canada are being recalled after reports of four infant suffocation. The CPSC said the recall involves 1.2 million cribs in the United States and nearly 1 million in Canada, where it is based Stork Craft. Sales of cribs being recalled back to 1993 and almost 150,000 of the cradles of wear the logo of Fisher-Price.
The agency said the drop-side cribs have a side that moves up and down to allow parents to remove children from the cradles more easily. He also said there had been 110 cases of abandonment of the sides of cribs detached.
Asked if people should leave these cribs, Tenenbaum said he recommends. She said consumers can also order kits to immobilize manufacturer plastic sides of the crib.
"The commission will draft regulations in the coming months and we will discuss this issue on abandonment of the parties," Tenenbaum said. "I do not think abandoning ofcribs parties will be a party to the future."
Cribs Art Stork have had problems with their hardware that can break, warp or become missing after years. CPSC said there may also be problems with assembly errors by the owner of the crib. These problems can cause the drop side to separate, creating a dangerous space between the drop side and the crib mattress, where a child can become trapped.
The cribs, which were manufactured and distributed between January 1993 and October 2009, were sold at major retailers like BJ's Wholesale Club, Sears and Wal-Mart and online through Target and Costco. It sold for between $ 100 and $ 400, and were conducted in Canada, China and Indonesia.
Stork Craft Calls were not immediately returned.
This is the second major recall this year for the company. Cribs recalled about 500,000 in January because of problems with the metal brackets that support the mattress. Some of the same models in the first recall also part of Monday's announcement, the CPSC said.
Tenenbaum asked why federal regulators did not intervene earlier.
"We just act has not been as fast as it should be on the Consumer Product Safety Commission on these types of incidents," she said. "I have been appointed some months ago to head the Consumer Product Safety Commission and this case came before me, only a few weeks ago."
Consumer advocates have complained for years of neglect of side cribs. Over 5 million have been recalled over the past two years - recalls that were associated with the death of a dozen children.
ASTM International, an organization that sets safety standards for the industry's voluntary everything from toys to the steel used in commercial buildings, approved last week a new standard that requires four buildings, or fixed, parts of cribs Full size - eliminating the manufacture ofdrop - side cribs.
The CPSC is also considering new rules for making cribs safer and could take the voluntary ASTM standard as a mandatory, non-cribs.
Nancy Cowles, executive director of the Chicago-based Kids in Danger, said the agency should include more rigorous testing for durability crib. "Parents should be able to trust that your child is safe in her crib," said Cowles.
Toys "R''Us begun to eliminate side cribs abandonment earlier this year and no longer have the next month.
Stork Craft In memory, the date of manufacture, model number, the name of birth, country of origin, and the company name, address and contact information are in the assembly instruction sheet attached to the carrier plate the mattress. India batsmen dominate Sri Lanka
Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag hit hundreds as India dominated the first day of the second test against Sri Lanka.
Gambhir (167) and Sehwag (131), which was eliminated without scoring by Mahela Jayawardene, put on 233 after India won the toss and elected to bat in Kanpur.
Muttiah Muralitharan removed both men on either side of tea, but Rahul Dravid (85 not out) and Sachin Tendulkar (20 not out) led India to 417-2 at stumps.
It was the first time that India had made 400 in one day in a test.
Kumar Sangakkara's depleted attack was hammered by the park as a higher order of India said there was no capitulation as in the first test at Ahmedabad.
Sehwag, 31, was unusually harsh in the first hour and was abandoned by Jayawardene at first slip before he could leave the brand, before moving on to dominate the open position.
He broke the chains of driving Angelo Mathews for their first place at the border over 12 and followed that with a pull to mid-stop fence in the same envelope.
Sehwag then jumped ahead of Gambhir and reached his 16th Test century off just 97 deliveries by turning Muralitharan a limit to the fine leg.
Muralitharan hammered three boundaries consecutive Sehwag as India past the 200 accelerated in the afternoon session and accumulate runs at breakneck pace, before Muralitharan made the breakthrough.
Sehwag led to a delivery with a little more air and chose Tillakaratne Dilshan at extra cover.
Gambhir's 28 years of age, who had provided the initial impetus, fell as he approached his century, but we arrived in style, without going through the track to hit Rangane Herath for a straight boundary.
It was his eighth century and the second in succession after a century in the second entries Ahmedabad.
Along with Dravid, Gambhir added 137 for the second window, before Muralitharan ripped a brilliant caught and pulled to the second window of Sri Lanka at the time.
Dravid reached his half century - 58 years in the tests - by sweeping Muralitharan for one and he and Tendulkar played with caution to finish the day without losing.
Ajantha Mendis, who took the injured player Dammika Prasad fast side, admitted 87 of 19 acquisitions, while Herath - the third specialist spinner in Sri Lanka attack - 91 from 18 overs leaked.
Muralitharan, whose form has been questioned in recent times, finished with figures of 2-100 from 18 overs.

Gold Hits Record High Over 1167 Dollars an Ounce
Gold prices jumped today to record-breaking prices of $1,167 an ounce as the strength of the dollar failed and investors ploughed their resources into bullion.
When other financial markets are uncertain, gold prices rocket. Gold is a safety net and a dependable asset in times of crisis; a trend which has seen bullion prices rise by 32 per cent so far this year and continue to raise the bar of increasing price thresholds.
Monday’s sharp ascension saw prices shoot up by $15 an ounce from the market closing price on Friday. With US interest rates hitting disappointing lows, gold is a more attractive investment opportunity, leading to increasingly bullish attitudes on the gold market from top analysts.
“We’re in unchartered territory. It’s going to move fairly freely,” ANZ senior commodity analyst Mark Pervan told Reuters, “Momentum becomes quite a big driver of prices. You could see the hint of safe haven buying returning”.
Momentum is certainly with the developing economies in the current market. Demand is being pushed by the BRIC nations of Brazil, Russia, India and China, the fastest growing economies in the world. Earlier this month India purchased 200 tonnes of gold from the International Monetary Fund for $6.7 billion (£4.1 billion), emptying nearly half of the IMF’s gold reserve.
With such a voracious appetite, analysts now expect gold to hit the magical $1,200 per ounce figure sometime in the next year. Afshin Nabavi from refiner MKS Finance told the BBC: “It looks like $1,200 will be seen much sooner than expected.”

Jazz breaking news: the Pheasantry returned to life with Finn Peters and Michael Wollny
A brace of contrasting performances of leading British saxophonist Finn Peters and German piano sensation Michael Wollny prove the wisdom of the Pheasantry returning to London's live music circuit.
Formerly a focal point for the year 1960 bohemian counter-culture, the venue has seen the likes Eric Clapton and Francis Bacon come and go. But this year's London Jazz Festival see the long recovery of the venue's live music program, with two strong solo sets.
Equipped with Personal, flute, percussion and electronic Finn Peters has a command to start. Looped rhythmic patterns against subtly layered distorted blues-based saxophone never be a platform for some of Greg Osby-like free-funk meets post-bop blowing to take control. But race is on the basis of this set as tonal Echos of Peter's saxophone responded to a number of powerful proto-techno beats. He concluded with an interesting piece scored called "Grab It" by the Dutch avant-pop composer Jacob Ter Veldhuis. The score represents a saxophone part in competitive explanations of American youths on death row. This rough-edged vocals, and punchy sax lines synchronized both rhythmically and tonally in a way that gave a voice to those who often go unheard.
This boisterous, confrontational first set by the hypnotic elegance of the second result. From the first note Wollny's musical instincts are clear. His play has walked a tight-rope between McCoy Tyner-esque intonation and harmony, and romance of twentieth-century Russian classical composers like Shostakovich. In this way the set was generally tonal with elements of atonality that any expectations, which had faced and how she would resolve issues. Perhaps at times the music is a bit defensively, and his sentence was continued for a broader sound. Yet the British public deserve to hear more of this formidable talent when London can not top nights at this rich city expected, so keep your eyes peeled for future dates.

Africa: Experts Seek Inclusion of Agriculture in Climate Talks
Nairobi - More than 60 leading scientists and agricultural leaders have decried the almost total absence of agriculture in the climate talks, warned that the climate is much to be reached next month could lead to widespread famine and food shortages in the years ahead.
Signatories of a statement over the weekend in Rome, Italy, issued by leading thinkers in the development includes five World Food Prize laureates, former heads of development agencies, former Minister of Agriculture, and the heads of the world's leading alliance of agricultural research centers.
Driven by a significant oversight in the global climate talks that led to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen next month, the leaders said: "No credible or effective agreement to the challenges of climate change to address agriculture and the need for crop adaptation to ignore, to ensure that the world's future food supplies. "
Crop adaptation refers to agriculture's ability to withstand climate change. Farmers problems that they never before experienced much greater weather variability, a higher average temperatures will experience increases in numbers of very hot days, shorter growing season, higher solar radiation, much more moisture stress, added salinity of salt water incursion and irrigation, and new combinations of pests and diseases.
"The adverse impacts of climate change on agriculture, and therefore the production of food, was also a risk for all other efforts to reduce and adapt to new climatic conditions," the statement said. "The magnitude of the change is expected, even in a relatively optimistic scenario, is historically unprecedented, and our agricultural systems are still largely unprepared to face it."
Al, effects of global warming has hit Kenya's agricultural sector. The prolonged drought this year has led to near crop failure. Al's Food and Agriculture Organization of the warning that the maize crop in the country will fall by 30 percent from last year.
The group is negotiating to recognize the importance of crop diversity conservation and use as an essential element in the promises that they will make the climate change adaptation.
"It may be more widely understood that agriculture will have to adapt to climate change, but only because they have to adapt, it does not mean it will not," said Gebisa Ejeta, winner of this year's World Food Price and Distinguished Professor in Agronomy at Purdue University.
"The size of the crop to unprecedented circumstances can not be taken for granted. It requires rigorous research and complex, precise work and a serious commitment of public funding. This should be an urgent priority because of the billions whose future depends away from it. "
Studies by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) predict that dramatic climate change impacts on food production will have. Some estimates are that crop yields in some areas could drop by as much as one third in just two decades without a direct investment in developing new crop varieties.
"On the farm ready for such dramatic new growing environments is not a trivial matter," warned the signatories. "For agriculture to adapt, crops must adapt, but there is no" change the climate of the genes, "not a single trait, which can ensure that their much less to increase their productivity in a new environment will be maintained ,. Vamp teen crush
The Twilight Saga: New Moon "grossed $ 72 million on its opening Friday - breaking the $ 67 million re cord set last year by" The Dark Knight. "Joan Li, a 15-year-old" Twihard "attending Midwood HS in Brooklyn and I saw the flick yesterday in Times Square, shares her thoughts on why teenage girls are sinking their fangs into the vampire phenomenon.
I'm a fan of the "Twilight" books in the 8th grade - way before it was popular, because I love to read fantasy romance vampire stories.
Personally, I love it because it's a modern version of "Romeo and Juliet," and any girl would want that fantasy come true in real life.
So when I found out there was going to be the first film, I was like, OMG! I can not wait to see it!
I was such an obsession, I will do anything to do with "Twilight buying."
That's kinda where I spend all my money - on the books and magazines and stuff.
The first movie is so good that this time around, I had a countdown calendar on my iPod set for "New Moon" begins in July. Every day I look at the numbers of ticks, so it would go faster.
My friend Clarissa, Kimberly and I was here at 10:30 this afternoon showing, and the theater was packed with girls - and maybe some boys who came to see the girls.
There was literally only five theaters for "New Moon" The crowd was all quiet when the movie started, but when Jacob (Taylor Laughton plays the werewolf) has his shirt off, everyone in the theater gasped!
I heard there was 36 minutes from Jacob Shirtless in the entire film.
Many of the girls in their 20s, as Edward (Robert Pattinson, the vampire). He has a more mysterious vibe, but it is a little too hairy. When Edward for the first time in the movie, it was in slow motion and you could hear a long groan from the audience.
Let us just say that I decided to Team Jacob instead of Team Edward.
I have Jacob on the "Regis and Kelly" show the other day and I was WOW! I have no words.
I just want to meet him so bad, because he is really cute and, um, his body is so delicious.
He had to pack on 30 pounds of muscle in this film. Plus he is closer to my age.
During the film, when Bella (Kristen Stewart) left Jacob, I was so emotional. He was just absolutely beg her to stay, and I was like, OMG, I feel so bad.
I'm sure other people have cried at that scene, because I heard screams all around me.
But I had my eyes not to take away from the screen because I was completely awestruck.
Overall, the successor was certainly much better than the first.
"New Moon" was more like the book than the first film had a better action, and was more of a love triangle.
The ending is a total cliffhanger. I would not give it away, but it was really sweet.
Once I find out exactly when the third movie is coming out, I will set my countdown again.
My parents are always like, "this is not really, give it up." But I was like, 'No way. I love it! "
Kristen Stewart Talks 'Twilight: Eclipse'
Yes, the Summit Entertainment's "Twilight: New Moon" arrived in theaters this weekend, but do you really think this is the end of "Twilight be" updates? Certainly not for consideration of "Twilight: The Shack" is the third film based on the novel of the same name by Stephanie Meyer, should arrive in theaters next June After that we will probably see "Eclipse" and even possibly a spin-off or two. In any case, star Kristen Stewart recently said the love triangle is a major problem in the "Dawn". "They kind of silly getting it in the" New Moon ", but it is actually going to something very, very real for Bella." And she also said something along the lines of her ultimate devotion to Edward faltering. Now that would be interesting to see uitspeel.

"Maybe he has his first attempt at a little more difficult than he would have done, but it's great to see him with ball in hand and try to score for Wales again."
Welsh skipper Jones beamed: "I compare with Shane at a Premier football striker.
"He is a predator, someone who would always walk out of the tunnel with you."
Williams himself said: "I'm in the team to score tries and it's always great to cross the line.
"It's always great to reach landmarks, but this one is very much for the team. It was a massive game for us."

The Site industrialists would also discuss the negative impact of next week and try to find the time, especially in the textile sector as a minister has hit hard due to rising yarn prices, the export of cotton, 0.5 percent increase in refinance rate increases in terminal handling charges and a lack of practical implementation of the decisions taken in the textile and trade policy.
He said that if the government has a rescue package can apply for the fertilizer industry, it should be the same treatment should be extended to industries, especially textiles and value-added sectors.
Salim said that a further increase of 18 percent would adversely affect the manufacturing sector because it is under pressure from higher costs of doing business and its survival has become difficult because the government is to raise prices of utilities gas, electricity, etc. off and on.
He told the hearing fixed by Ogra to input from the consumer is only a formality.

He further said that in the trial of SSGC in Ogra for the proposed reduction of gas and proposed increase in fares, KCCI's representative, Dr Ahmed Kamal Qazi has transferred the discussions of the KCCI, but in vain.

Militants blow themselves up in Pak-administered Kashmir
MUZAFFARABAD: Three suspected Taliban militants blew themselves up on Saturday as police chased them in Pakistani-administered Kashmir, police said.
Militants have carried out a series of bomb attacks across Pakistan in recent weeks in retaliation for a military offensive in the northwest, but there have been no attacks in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
The Saturday incident will revive concern that the militants are trying to expand their campaign of violence to distract the military as it makes progress in an offensive in South Waziristan on the Afghan border.
Police said they launched a hunt in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, after residents reported that three men had dumped a bag of weapons on a road in the centre of the town.
‘They ran towards the mountains when our men chased them and blew themselves as we got close,’ Tariq Qayyum, a senior police official, told Reuters.
‘Their bodies have blown apart. We have found two heads and a torso.’
Kashmir is at the core of a decades-old dispute between Pakistan and India and the cause of two of their three wars since their independence from British rule in 1947.
Separatist insurgents allegedly backed by Pakistan have been fighting Indian security forces in Indian-administered Kashmir for the past 20 years, but Pakistani-administered Kashmir had been largely peaceful. Two Pakistani soldiers were killed in the first suicide attack in Pakistani-administered Kashmir in June.
That raised concern that the militants were expanding their attacks into new areas to divert the security forces. — Reuters

New Moon' eclipsing two box-office records
This is only for greats such thoughts may also sung to mark their death. Because they are immortal because of the legacy they leave behind, which continues to breathe, and to inspire.
And the artistic heritage can be more valuable than talented pen of Faiz Ahmed Faiz. His mesmerising verses, as well as our love for Urdu poetry, are now only a few strands left that still tie India and Pakistan together.
Delhi commemorated the 25th anniversary of the death of Faiz, Pakistani shayyar large, in an event organized jointly by the Nehru Memorial SAHM and Thursday.
Cantos of his life were brought alive by the melodic, yet powerful, voice Mudgal known classical singer Shubha.
At the beginning of the program, sometimes modestly Shubha open a confession that she had neither taught Urdu, as she knew the nuances of its pronunciation, so it would not have enough errors. Because she was a devotee of Faiz, it was made sahas DUS (sauce) to sing his poems.
She added, "So your socha, DUS sahas agar hai ki kar hi karen rahey of jum Zara key" (I then thought, if I am taking the liberty as well I can do it with aplomb)
After taking all shutterbugs to slake their cameras, Shubha went on to present a mix of Ghazals ... by stanzas lovelorn, the gap feeling that every human being experiences in some stage of his life.
"Is waqt hai tu ga towards Kuch Yun Hai Hai Hai
Mahtab us sooraj, andhera us sawera us
Dil Kisi kee kai dareechai PAI khuwab chilman
Aur dil mein Kisi kee panahon standards has pigs "
Among other songs that she presented was' Sukhi Rahe Koi Nahin 'and also Jinki' Rah Gaye Beet South tact .... "
Appropriate height of a revolutionary Faiz, who repeatedly called for change in his country, recalled Shubha bravado in his writings ...
"Tujh Ko kitno has lahoo Chhahiye AEY Arze wattan
Not all of Aarize Berang ko Gulnaar Karein
Kitni Aahon that Kale tera Thanda Hogan
Kitney Aansoo Tere Sehraon ko Gulzaar Karein
Hum hain ke Mehmaan For Bharat Hamaara Ghadi Mera Dil "
After loud cheers and prodding, Shuba, who had finished her presentation, agreed to continue singing, but warned that she was tempted to read a long part, which can get a little boring.
In this, an enthusiastic public responded that Delhiwalas were used to block traffic long.
In general, all were vibrant evening, warm and had a comfortable feeling of a mushaira, even though the country was Teen Murti Auditorium.
Shubha musical tribute to this giant of Urdu poetry spoke volumes of her love for his creations, something that she had received in the beginning, calling themselves the murid "his bhakt.
The event had started with small lecture on the life and times of Faiz by renowned academician Prof. Sadik ur Rahman Kidwai. Recalling vitality Faiz in his writings, and nobility in his conduct, he sought to give praise to the poet, calling it a milestone in its genre.
Going by the reaction of the audience and calls for a repeat Ghazals, it was clear that Faiz is one of those rare, once in a century artists, who will not forget Delhi.

Lack of star power in EU
Almost a year after America elected charismatic, inspirational and multi-cultural Barack Obama as president, leaders of the 27-nation European Union was the exact opposite: they squabbled for weeks and then - surprise - elected two low-profile, provincial and without interest politicians newly created posts of block seen the president and foreign policy chief.
Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy will become the first president of the Council of the EU and Britain's Catherine Ashton will be foreign minister / senior representatives. Both are virtually unknown outside their native countries. Van Rompuy was Belgian Prime Minister for a year, for the same time as Ashton has been in Brussels, EU trade commissioner. At the request of former Minister of the UK Prime Minister Tony Blair for the post of senior derailed by the opposition, Van Rompuy was chosen for his reputation as a peacemaker who helped prevent the breakup Belgium. Ashton appeared as a last-minute compromise, after British Foreign Secretary, David Miliband ruled himself out. Selection of new team says a great deal for the EU - and its vision for the future.
First, the world can rest easy: Europe has decided to put domestic politics on international ambitions. Secondly, forget the fear / hope the EU a superpower '. "As Van Rompuy as Ashton will ask for - or to succeed in - the dominant global stage. Thirdly, to give up any illusion that the EU requires a change of direction or a real transformation of its political machinery. Duo new likely to opt for 'safe and stable' policies, not engage in fresh, ground-breaking thinking.
Fourth, EU governments will remain the key-mediator in the coming years, with national leaders continued to call the shots, including in economic talks within the Group of 20, forum dealing with the following -effects of economic crisis. Fifth, elections Spotlights a powerful new role of the EP.
The two largest groups in the EU assembly - the party of center-right European People and center-left Socialists - had insisted on a political balance between the two new appointments. Sixth, the small member states strongly opposed to the work of the Council President will be one of the major members, such as France or Great Britain, fearing it would lead to domination of the country's largest council, and reduce role of the European Commission.
Seven, in Ashton, EU leaders have at least met with some criticism at the lack of women in top jobs. True, Obama and U.S. comparisons are unfair. Obama was elected by popular vote, while the appointment of two Van Rompuy and Ashton is the result of a selection procedure mysterious and inscrutable. All 27 EU leaders had to agree to meetings, taking into account a number of factors such as nationality, political affiliation and the need for a balance between rich countries and poor, east and west, north and south - as well as between men and women.
EU president - general consensus now is that he will be really more of a paper-pushing 'general secretary' or 'head' - is expected to organize meetings of the bloc, EU leaders held, to engage in the unseemly bickering and represent the global stage block. An economist and former budget minister, Van Rompuy believed to have impressed his colleagues, because after 18 months of caretaker government, he brought political stability in Belgium.
"My role - and this is the role stated in the Treaty - is to find consensus," said Van Rompuy reporters after his appointment. 'You can ask me for my personal opinion, but my personal views are irrelevant. In my new role I do not intend to make known my views personal. "
Ashton, as foreign minister, will also be crisscrossing the globe, seeking to speak for the EU. She faces a difficult job, however, that by Javier Solana, EU High Representative of the high current and former NATO secretary general is universally respected and has cultivated international friends and allies with skill and intelligence. In contrast, Ashton is reported to have no foreign policy experience and has not held an elected post.
However, after she was nominated, she dismissed concerns that in its EU-level experience will be a handicap in dealing with world leaders. "Am I an ego on legs? No, I'm not," Ashton told reporters. "Judge me for what I do, and I think you will be proud of me." Not surprisingly, two meetings without interest met with shock and disappointment in Brussels and other European capitals, with the EU on-Watchers - including this correspondent - surprised with the decision to take a team likely to project voice of Europe in the global stage.
Significantly, as they are likely to overshadow EU leaders such as French President Nicolas Sarkozy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, leaders of the bloc's true heavyweight, which were not available to countenance any competition . Lower their key personalities also says European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso - a former Portuguese prime minister - will loom large in the phase of the EU.
Asked after the meeting that the EU represents Europe on the world stage, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the leaders of France, Germany, Spain and the people - and does not mention or new appointees.
"We have outstanding leaders throughout Europe," said Brown, adding: "We are able to represent Europe in the whole world."
What a missed opportunity. The purpose of exercising all the Lisbon Treaty was ultimately to boost Europe's global profile and streamline the decision-making clunky and outdated system. True, as Ashton Van Rompuy and believed to be diligent worker, and consensus-builders who will be happy enough to work behind the scenes rather than in the global spotlight. This is all very good. But as always America dominate the world stage, Russia, China and India want a stronger than in global governance, the EU could have done with some star power.
