WASHINGTON - The head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission acknowledged on Tuesday that the agency "has not acted as quickly as it should" about crib safety problems.
Interviewed on morning news program shown in the wake of the largest ever recall of cribs, Inez Tenenbaum President pledged that the CPSC was "firmly but fairly" enforce a law Congress passed last year to give regulators greater authority to police the industry.
More than 2.1 million drop side cribs by Stork Craft Manufacturing Canada are being recalled after reports of four infant suffocation. Consumer advocates have complained for years of neglect of side cribs. Over 5 million have been recalled over the past two years - recalls that were associated with the death of a dozen children.
