Bars Busted for Binge Drinking
Champaign - Mayor Schweighart is ready to ensure that bar owners pay a high price for breaking the rules. 11 bars of the U of I Campus may be closed. They got caught promoting and organizing some drinking games.
White Horse Inn is attached to almost every bar on campus that made a bad move in November. That the mayor says he participated in an event called "Barscramble 2009."
More than a thousand students came through its doors and the matches played by the drink. They split into groups of eight and competed to see who could drink more. That is against city code. Mayor Schweighart says it has evidence including photos of drunkenness. He says the bars * No more Squeak by breaking the law. "We know from 10 years ago I will not allow this to happen so this was kind of in your face," said Schweighart about bars. "[They were] are going to do what we do and if you do that, then we will have to pay the price."
Each bar will meet one on one with the city attorney from next week. The mayor declined to say exactly what his penalties are. He said that the suspensions of 30 days is more likely that heavy fines.
None of the bars that go on camera Monday night. A manager told me to call attention to himself and get the police knocking at his door.
