Tiger and the backlash against interracial marriage?
A friend sent me this Associated Press story, "Tiger problems extend its distance from the black" on the election of Tiger Woods in women:
"Amid all the news generated by the problems of Tiger Woods - the car accident disconcerting, the suggestions of civil unrest and several mistresses - has paid little attention to the race of women affiliated with the world's largest golf . Except for the black community. "When three white women were said to be romantically involved with Woods, besides his wife blonde, Swedish, blogs, radio waves and barbershops began to hum, and already tenuous standing Woods , among many blacks was beaten. ... The arrows show the black resistance to interracial romance. "(Click here to read the full story.)
My friend, who is white, asked, "Why the backlash against interracial marriage?" My answer is that some people (blacks, whites, Asians, Hispanics) are still backward in their thinking on these matters. Admittedly, not all.
I, for example, could not care less. It means nothing to me that Woods or anyone else, prefer white women. Long ago, I walked away from the notion of athletes as role models, or worthy pedestal. And that was long before a friend suggested Charles Barkley Tiger boys do not consider it as such.
I do not think his wife was worried about the race of his alleged mistresses.
And yet, I understand why this is important for some in the black community. The above story does a good job of outlining some of the concerns. However, I think it's time to move beyond the mind as narrow. People should be able to choose who they want to marry, and those who want to break their marriage vows. Election of Tiger in the woman tells me less about his character that "transgressions" themselves.
And yet, it's a private matter.
Over Tiger racial preferences in women, I think there is another comment here that says a lot about women. Used to be that an adventure was a mistake, a quiet affair, carried out in secret and covered with shame.
Why these women (I counted nine to date) are out for themselves, is beyond me. Are queuing as saying: "I slept with Tiger Woods' --- A twist on the old" I am Tiger Woods ads. Ah, those 15 minutes of fame. Who cares if they are sleazy and bad taste?
Let me know what you think ...
