UTSA men cruise past UT-Pan Am
His team and on his way to a 84-58 thrashing of Texas-Pan American, UTSA coach Brooks Thompson share a laugh with Sei Paye-up purposes.
The theme?
"His haircut," Thompson said. "I asked him if he has a girlfriend. He said no, so I was wondering if you ever wondered why".
Thompson's comment has its limits, however. He refused to choose a favorite among high-rise paye Flat-Top and the Mohawk favored by Demarco Stepto.
It was that kind of Monday night at the Call Center: Serious enough to produce a new victory - UTSA seventh in nine games - but loose enough to serve as a prize for one of the best starts in the history of school.
The Roadrunners went 4-0 for the first time, and then 6-1 at the first time since 1988. His current record is the best since 2001.
More telling, that have progressed to the point that Saturday's 61-55 loss to Oklahoma State was seen as a failure, rather than a moral victory.
"We're disappointed," said guard Morris Smith, "because we expect to beat everyone we play."
That was the case against the humble broncs, which came in 1-8. They led briefly to 6-4 before UTSA jump ahead for good with a run of 13-0.
Since there was an opportunity for tinkering, but with a lot of success.
Devin Gibson threw an alley-oop balloon Terry Fields, one of his six assists. Freshman Melvin Johnson, once again shows its deadly touch, drilling 5 of 6 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 19 points in 14 minutes. The 6-foot-7, 280-pound Stepto ended the game with a drip screen, the "Escalade" And1 tour.
With 10 days off before their next game on December 18 at Pan Am, Thompson said he hopes to use the pause as an opportunity to make the best team I've ever coached at UTSA even better.
"I'm happy to be 7-2, but I think we can be better," he said. "I'm very proud. We are doing a lot of good things. When I'm hard on them, it is because of the small things, discipline little things we can do a really good team."
